Kanha National Park

Central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh is well known for its natural splendor and has some of the best wooded regions of the country. One of the best managed and most beautiful Tiger reserve of India – Kanha national park is situated here. Kanha’s Sal and Bamboo forests attract tourists from all over the world. Another big attraction for wildlife lovers is – Hard ground Barasingha or twelve tinned swamp deer found here which is endemic to Kanha’s forest and rightly called ‘Jewel of Kanha’.

Created in the year 1955, Kanha national park was designated Tiger reserve status in early 1970’s when the than Prime Minister of India Late Smt Indira Gandhi ji started Project Tiger. Since its creation Kanha has helped in preserving a variety of animal species and biodiversity as a whole. Certainly sacrifice, hard work and dedication of park management to local people, has contributed in this endeavor. Today Kanha is ideal home to both predators and prey.

Spread over Mandla and Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh, Kanha Tiger Reserve covers an area of almost 2000 Sq. Km. with 940 being core area. Tourism has always been conducted in the core area of the reserve but now even buffer is being developed to cater to the needs of eco-friendly tourists. Bamhini Dadar is the highest point in the reserve and you can see the panoramic view of these magnificent forests from the top. Kanha forests serve two tributaries of river Narmada, The Surpan and the Banjar.

Major Wildlife Attractions of Kanha

 Kanha is home to 22 mammalian, 259 bird, 117 butterfly and host of other living beings. People visitingKanha can spot Tiger - the striped cat, followed by, Leopard, Gaur, Sambhar, Chital, Barasingha, Barking deer, Black buck, Sloth bear, Jackal, Fox, Porcupine, Jungle cat, Python, Hare, Monkey, Mongoose, etc., including many other birds, reptiles, insects and butterflies. 

Some of the birds species we can spot here include Storks, Teals, Pintails, Herons, Egrets, Peacock, Pea fowl, Jungle fowl, Spur fowl, Partridges, Quails, Doves, parakeets, Green pigeons, Cuckoos, Rollers, Bee-eater, Hoopoes, Drongos, Warblers, Kingfishers, Woodpeckers, Finches, Orioles, Owls, and Fly catchers amongst many others.
